Oh my god oh my god I am probably way too excited at this prospect, but, come on, an FPR. A First-Person-Runner/Diver/Climber/Leaper/Misjudge Distance And Faceplant Thirty Feet Down...er. And look at those screenshots. Look at them!
...When did I become so enamoured with first person games? Was it Thief? Did Thief make me this way?
God Given - Nine Inch Nails
Somehow I have memorized all the lyrics of this song, and every time it comes on I have to do this sort of twitching clockwork-y dance and spit the words with all the conviction and contempt I can muster. It's got a rhythm that gets under your skin and into your brain. I love it.
Hey man, please don't make a sound
Take a look around, can't you see what's right in front of you
Have a little taste, no more time to waste
You don't wanna get left behind cause it's all coming down right now
Shalebridge Cradle - Eric Brosius
Maybe it's the hiss of wind through empty corridors, maybe it's the whisper of children long-gone, or the strange sounds of something entirely...else, maybe it's the juddering tick that is something like a clock and something like an unsteady pulse, but this music/noise is essentially why I'm apprehensive about playing TDS again. Eric Brosius was the man who said that fear is made of sound; I believe it. WARNING: Do not listen to this music in the dark, when alone, or at all, if possible.
You Gotta Love This City - The Whitlams
As per request: Whitlams! This song is about how much the subject hates his life, and how it's all right because he loves his city, but then he realises his city is a whore, and it ends with him committing suicide. Thus, it was used in a tourism ad for Sydney, because advertising executives are wacky like that. It has a very laid back, loungey kind of sound.
The houses all the same, now here's the rain
Not falling but collapsing at his feet
Deep breath and he clocks on, raincoat on his arm
He wishes the hours would disappear
Thanks For You Time - Gotye
I described this song to
twilit_wanderer as "one big middle finger to pre-recorded customer service messages", because that is what it is. If you have a pressing desire to hear more or less what my accent sounds like, there is a part where he records himself being annoyed at the phone.
If you wish to make a complaint
We can handle it, we're well prepared to handle it
Of course you may have to wait
But that's understandable
Isn't that understandable?
Air Aid - Menomena
More Menomena! This is one of the more political-y songs (and why is it that I have the urge to adjectivise everything today?) and probably one of their oddest sounding, as well.
Cover your ears, cover your eyes, cover your mouth
silence, blindness, tasteless violence
Enjoy!

Date: 2008-01-12 05:18 am (UTC)...even though I think I might have gotten this before, but maybe that was a different Cradle music.
I'm not entirely sure what I think of FPWhatevers yet -- I tried playing some Deus Ex and, er, didn't make it past the training mode, but I suspect that might be because I got bored because it was the training mode -- but I have to say, the screenshots look amazing.
I should probably reply to your other music post, but I think I'll just do that here. I loved every single one of the songs you uploaded, especially the Gotye and especially "Harrowdown Hill." I think I listened to quite a few on loop, mostly because I accidentally left iTunes on repeat. But I think it says something that it took me approximately three listens before I went, "Whoa! Hey, maybe this song shouldn't last quite so long."
What I'm trying to say is eeeeeeeee! New pretty music! I am ridiculously excited to put them on my iPod and random CDs.
Also also! More Whitlams! I'd just recently been thinking about how I should try to get you to upload more. I don't understand why the U.S. hasn't become enamored by them, because I sure have. And everyone knows that EVERYONE IN THE UNITED STATES LIKES THE SAME MUSIC I DO.
And! And I really like your other Gotye song. You know, the one that's actually in this post. Aaaaaand I'm not going to listen to the Cradle song because I think that can wait for later. I AM PRETTY SURE I KNOW HOW THAT WOULD END. With me, under the bed.
Ooooh, and I like Between Worlds a lot too. I'm not entirely sure what I think of "God Given." I suspect it will grow on me the more I listen to it, though. And I
Also, I really really like that piano bit in "Wet and Rusting." It reminds me of something, but I can't quite put my finger on what yet. And really, I just like all of Menomena's songs.
I have no idea how to end this post! So! Thank you! I am totally listening to these songs a ton now.

Date: 2008-01-14 04:50 am (UTC)Well, the main reason I'm so interested is that it's hitting quite a few of my, uh, buttons, such as acrobatic movement, urban environments, and a girl protagonist whom the developers are insisting they will not sex up. The fact that it's in first person intrigues me, because it's such a great device for putting you in the moment. Of course, since that Assassin's Creed fiasco I've been trying not to let myself get too excited, but my hopeful geeky heart, as always, will not allow itself to stay crushed for long. It is like a sponge.
The Deus Ex training level isn't quite as bad as the TDS training level, but it's very much not indicative of what it's like actually playing. Actually playing is like the game is trying to make you schizophrenic. "Okay, so I gotta get to the statue past all these guards to complete the mission, so I'll need to - oh hey I can hack these terminals for sweet monies, that's cool, I could bri- whoa maybe I should try to sneak in through those air vents. Or talk to those punks over there, they might have - what, hostages at the train station? Okay. Oooh, a bar. I should go get drunk!"
Harrowdown Hill is so cool and creepy. I was so, so tempted to add it to my mental Assassin's Creed playlist, but it feels kind of weird knowing what it's really about. This is what I get for visiting Songmeanings.net.
You don't have to get me to upload things, you can just ask. Baco did! Although I'm afraid I don't have any more Whitlams music. Hmm. I wonder if I should upload all the Thief music I have...it would take quite a while...
I love Thanks For Your Time, because the number of occasions I've argued fruitlessly with that blasted ultra-cheerful-robot defies belief. "What name, please?" What are they referring to? After two attempts when I slammed down the phone in frustration, my dad told me it was the business I was looking for. There are no clues to this in context, apparently you just sort of have to infer it.
Between Worlds is awesome. I'm listening to it on loop now!
I'm glad you like the music! I love making music posts, especially when other people enjoy the music.

Date: 2008-01-14 04:29 am (UTC)I STUPIDLY IGNORED THIS
SOUNDsorry, unintentional but awful pun, that GOOD ADVICE.Actually, I was listening to another song and reading at the time and just tossed it into my playlist, so I've no idea when I actually started listening to it, but it suddenly occurred to me that I was not moving and, in fact, barely breathing. So I ended up glancing at winamp, and it informed me I was about four minutes in, so, uh, yeah! Freaky. Then relistening so I could actually, you know, listen to it, made me freeze up again. BECAUSE NOT MOVING WILL ALWAYS SAVE YOU FROM SCARY NOISES.
... Terror aside, I really like the other songs! Especially "Thanks For Your Time," which is awesomeness!

Date: 2008-01-27 06:44 am (UTC)...But perhaps I will look into it once I finally finish Knights of the Old Republic (though I am promising nothing)! Because soul-breaking games are generally the best ones, and I like to inflict such things upon myself, apparently.

Date: 2008-01-29 12:16 pm (UTC)If you want to be chronological (I wasn't) you'll have to start hunting up old copies of Thief: The Dark Project. I sacked the second-hand section of my favourite game store for the one I have, and, er, the other one I have that is a special edition SHUT UP I'M NOT OBSESSED but you might have more trouble. How are you at FPS?

Date: 2008-01-29 06:29 pm (UTC)Game stores here are pretty, uh... Lame. And don't carry many (if any at all) used anythings. Fortunately, there is internet. Yay for you, internet, and your vendors! I am... not good, no, I am actually not very good at any games, despite how much I game (dumb gaming luck, however? I have lots), but I manage FPS, usually without too much trouble. My brother is much better. OOH, I CAN BUY A COPY AND MAKE HIM PLAY WHILE I WATCH.
