Something I have decided after flicking through complaints about BioWare and their plot methods:

If you break a story down into its most basic clichés shorn of all context, that doesn't mean the story is actually basic or clichéd. It means you have a rough understanding of the way media is constructed. Good for you. Round of applause. Have a chocolate.

It doesn't form a basis for criticism, and attempting to act like it does makes you look like an asshole.

Signed, Someone Who Directly Compared Mass Effect 3 and Baldur's Gate And Was Blown Away By The Improvement Upon All Aspects Of The Latter In The Former, Thank You Very Much.

(P.S. Also, if you're complaining about how the choices in any of the newer BioWare games are forced, morally restricting and limited, while praising the game based on a system which put a helpful little label on every character to tell you whether they were nice or an asshole, you probably need to re-examine your argument.)

Bioware:

I can name my player characters. I can name my dog (both of them). I can name Shale's pet rock.

WHY CAN'T I NAME MY SPACE HAMSTER?

Flames. Flames! On the side! Of my face! Third point down for rage.

Oh god, I really don't want to feel guilty when I buy a PS3 for The Last Guardian once it comes out. Or stick to playing Mass Effect over and over because I can at least choose a badass lady as my protagonist. There's only so much Bioware I can take before I overdose and start dumping exposition on people. Rarghblarghrarghlargh.

Last month, my sister and I were Christmas shopping in a music store, and my sister walked up to me with an album and said, "Could you buy this for me?"

It turned out to be because of the coverart, which was really awesome, although we could not in fact make out the name of the band or the album because it was so abstract. To make a long argument short, she eventually bought it herself, and it turned out to rock. (Plus, with the CD inside, the art was even cooler, because you could turn it around and see different things in it.) The album is called Friend and Foe, the band is Menomena, and they have this fantastically odd homemade sound that's as weird as their coverart.

So, I'm going to upload a couple of their songs for you! Along with some other random stuff that I'm digging at the moment. I'll probably upload a few more when the Internet co-operates, so be sure to tell me what you think.

These are mostly m4a, which is what iTunes converts things to. They should play in WinAMP, but if anyone has any trouble, I'll either link to a site that will let you convert things or, if my connection is not sucking, do it myself and re-upload them.

Ready?

Right!

Musics! )

I'll upload some more as soon as I beat Yousendit into submission.

Games I Did Not Expect to Adore This Year: Mass Effect. )

Speaking of things that make me jump for joy, I have renewed my attempt to actually finish Final Freaking Fantasy XII, and Balthier is far more awesome than you will ever be. I knew I loved him from roughly the moment he opened his mouth. If he and Garrett ever were in the same room with each other, I, well, I'd probably be left a trembling heap from their combined withering scorn, but by god I'd be the happiest heap that ever there was.

(Fran and Viktoria can sit by and discuss being badass non-human-yet-hawt chicks teamed up with wisecracking criminals. ...IF THIS GAME KILLS FRAN I WILL BE EXTREMELY PISSED. DON'T KILL FRAN. THE SUM TOTAL OF HAWT IN THE UNIVERSE WOULD BE DEALT A FATAL BLOW.)

I love how completely, sublimely unimpressed Fran and Balthier are by Vaan. It's beautiful.

I don't think I'm very far yet! I just rescued totally-not-the-princess and am faffing around attempting to escape the dungeons and making fun of Vaan. The music is irritating and the combat system is strange - I get the feeling it'll open up as the game goes on, but I just came out of Mass Effect and its RPG Combat That Is Actually Fun, so it's taking some getting used to.

The writing, or localization, I guess, is excellent, however. I think I'd play on just for it.
