Summarise/give vague clues to 10 of your fandoms in one sentence, then see who on your friendslist can guess each fandom.
Many of these are hopelessly obscure, and I could have written ten more. Maybe another time.
1. The only fandom that makes me wish we really did have a Flat Earth. - Discworld. Guessed by
rionaleonhart
2. Zombies; LOTS of zombies; like, huge amounts of them... also an epic tale about finding your place in the world, but mainly zombies.
3. Giant gay men, crossdressing, tentacle porn, bestiality, giant robots, mad scientists, zombies, alien viruses: it's the fandom that has everything, and most of it is canon. - FFVII, crack in a hat. Guessed by
firefly99
4. But I don't liiiike that canon!...Oh well, you can ignore the bits you don't like, right? - Star Wars. Oh, space you, EU haters. Matthew Stover is so much smarter than you anyway. Guessed by
firefly99
5. A dude, a chick, an old guy and a head voice; they - er - Prince of Persia. Who needs to fight crime when you can fight TIME? ...I'll be over here now.
squeemu
6. The witty cynic wittily says a cynical witticism, cynically, and then steals things. - Thief. "Heh! A throne room. How pretentious." Garrett, you lovable bastard. Guessed by
squeemu
7. Despite what you may have heard, this is not Trigun. - Firefly/Serenity. Yeah, apparently Joss stole everything from Trigun. He said so himself. Every scene ever. Guessed by
squeemu
8. ...Yeah, I don't think therapy is going to fix that. - Silent Hill 2, and mainly poor James. Don't worry, the fangirls still love you. Guessed by
rionaleonhart
9. Some stuff happens, then some more stuff happens, and then some other stuff happens, and then the world blows up, but nobody likes that one. - Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and yes, I would be one of the people who pretends that Mostly Harmless never happened. Guessed by
blue_oceandeep
10. It's in a perfectly ordinary school with some perfectly ordinary students and yet it is the crackiest thing I've ever seen in my life. - Azumanga Daioh, prozac for the soul. Guessed by
squeemu
ETA: You know what? Just for fun, here's some more. I should be revising and I need to take my mind off horrible impending exams. Think of them as bonus fandoms.
11. This fandom taught me more about the Cold War than my entire Year 11 Modern History unit. - MGS3. I'm assuming they left out the man covered in bees. Guessed by
firefly99
12. Man, when they say not to touch that button that's labelled 'press this for interdimensional alien invasion', they mean do not touch the button that's labelled 'press this for interdimensional alien invasion'...
13. He doesn't mope, he broods; way too stylish to mope. - Neil Gaiman's Sandman. Well, he has a gigantic gothic castle and dumping rain and a trenchcoat at will - do you have that when you brood? Guessed by
blue_oceandeep
14. "CHRIST, IS ANYONE IN THIS DAMN WORLD ACTUALLY ALIVE?" - FFX. Ah, Seymour, how I cheered when I finally killed you properly. Guessed by
firefly99
15. Cyborg zombies. - Hungry City Chronicles. Obviously. Guessed by

Date: 2006-11-08 10:33 am (UTC)8. I'm going to say Silent Hill 2. Although 14 also sounds a wee bit Silent Hill-ish.
I'm trying to find one that fits the Jak games, but I'm not sure I can.
no subject
Date: 2006-11-08 10:47 am (UTC)Alas, there is none for the Jak games. I was going to add one, but, er, I forgot. ...Apologies? If it helps, seven of these are video games, four are books, one's a comic, two are TV shows and one's multi-medium.

Date: 2006-11-08 04:48 pm (UTC)2. Resident Evil?
3. FF7, of course.
4. Not FFX? Star Wars? Hmm...dunno.
10. Ouran Host Club?
11. MGS3, has to be.

Date: 2006-11-09 10:15 pm (UTC)6. ...Thief? Never played it, but based on the "steals things" part, I'm going with an educated guess. (ALSO ALSO IS IT FUN? Wikipedia said something about Victorian steam punk! I am tempted to try and get it just for that, except I think I'd need a new computer.)
7. Cowboy Bebop? Or Firefly?
13. This could be so many things. I'll just have to start guessing. FFVIII? Angel?
15. HUNGRY CITY CHRONICLES

Date: 2006-11-10 02:41 am (UTC)6. Yes and yes. I've only played the third in the series, on Xbox, but it's pretty accessible (although apparently the worst in the series, they were all pretty benchmark titles). It's awesome, really, really atmospheric (and spooky as hell in places), and the main character rocks. His name's Garrett and he has the Best Voice Actor Ever. The sentence was based on the fact that in every single review I've seen, they have to mention that he's cynical, and quite a few add the wit part as well. They're right though - he mocks the heck out of everyone he steals from in this gloriously sly, sinister way. If you do plan to play it, try not to read up on the Shalebridge Cradle. It's much better if you go in unprepared.
7. Firefly! Correct.
13. Nope and nope!
15. YES

Date: 2006-11-10 03:44 am (UTC)I have no idea if you've seen this, but is 10 Azumanga Daioh? I haven't actually seen all of it, but it fits pretty well.

Date: 2006-11-10 04:08 am (UTC)As to the PS2 thing: SO DO I. Those great big Xbox controllers are murder on my tiny girl hands. I don't think you can play the first two on Windows Thhhhhbbb computers (which is made of suck - I wanna!) but the third one should work. They're called Dark Project, Metal Age and Deadly Shadows, all deal with certain factions in the City where Garrett lives (respectively Pagans, Hammers and Keepers). Um, just warning you, the tutorial mission sucks harder than quantum singularity and can't be skipped. And running around in the City can get really tedious. But the actual levels are cool, and Garrett's debriefings are always interesting to listen to (mainly because of his voice. I think somebody said it make women's clothes fall off).
Er, what's your opinion on first-person games?
no subject
Date: 2006-11-10 09:23 pm (UTC)I am suddenly worried about playing this at home. What if somebody comes in while he's in debriefing mode? What if their clothes fall off?
Definitely still going on my Christmas list, though. And at least that way if I can't get past the tutorials I won't feel horribly guilty.
I'm not really sure what my opinion is on first-person games, I don't think I've played very many. The only game I ever really played a lot of that was remotely first-person was Descent, way back in the old days of crappy computers and free mini-games. So, I have no idea if I'm any good at first-person games, but I'm not against them.
no subject
Date: 2006-11-10 10:46 pm (UTC)Take pictures. Blackmail. Obviously.
Well...it is a first person game by nature, but if you like you can switch to third-person with a button. My brothers got me onto video games, and they're big first-person-shooter dudes, so even though I suck at them I've learned to fake skill.
Oh, and the Victorian Steam-punk thing? It's more like vaguely medieval buildings, citizens and values with Victorian-style machines added on.
no subject
Date: 2006-11-11 03:13 am (UTC)See, I feel like I should be good at first-person shooters, but I've just never had the opportunity to play them much. And by "be good at" I actually mean "have played them," because I probably wouldn't be any good at them. Seems to me if you can fake skill, it's as good as having skill in the first place. So you still win!
So -- so the citizens and their values aren't Victorian? That's a little disappointing. Although by this point I've heard more than enough to still make me want to play it.
Also, regarding sentence 5 -- Psychonauts, Y/N?
no subject
Date: 2006-11-11 03:28 am (UTC)By 'fake skill' I mean playing a level over and over and over until I've pretty much memorized the position of enemies and can choreograph the whole thing like a dance number. My brothers seem to do that automatically the first time through, but I had to work at it. It's worth it, though. Half-Life 2 still sticks in my memory as having some of the most intensely beautiful moments of play ever.
I think the upper-class people are! They're all polite and stupid and backstabby. I know at one point I walked past two toffs planning to rob a museum because they thought it would be a lark. I stole one's purse and beat them to their plan, but it was still hilarious listening to them talk about how much fun it would be to fool a guard. And they have conversations consisting totally of "*statement*" "Quite! *statement*" "*Quite! *statement*" etc. ...Yeah, I'll shut up about it now.
5. Nope! Not even close. Unless you mean in terms of media. ...It does sort of fit, though. Raz the dude, Lili the chick, Cruller the old guy and the headvoice - but, alas, nope.
no subject
Date: 2006-11-11 04:49 am (UTC)Okay, so I have to ask now because I don't actually know how first-person shooters work because I am the worst gamer ever. Do you need a gun controller thing to play them? Or can you just use the normal controller? Because I know there have been some I've been interested in trying, but never really got around to it.
And okay, now I really need to get Thief. Oh, random Victorians. Why are you so awesome?
5. ...uh, let's try Prince of Persia? I haven't actually played it yet, but I own it!
no subject
Date: 2006-11-11 05:08 am (UTC)I do so love the rich people. They get really upset when you pilfer from them.
5.Correct! I was beginning to think no one would get that one. You should play it - the protagonist is also snarky and a toff, right down to being vaguely British. I want to hug him and clock him one simultaneously.
no subject
Date: 2006-11-11 05:26 am (UTC)I love sneaking games. Or, um, I love MGS and Sly Cooper. I have even more reason now to go get Thief. Looks like if I don't get it for Christmas I'll be buying it with my own money.
It's always the rich that get really upset, too. You'd think they couldn't spare the extra change.
5. I want to! I keep meaning to get around to it, but then I remember I have a Huge Project due in two days and figure I shouldn't distract myself. And then I spend the next 48 hours distracted by the Internet anyway, so I guess it doesn't really matter.
no subject
Date: 2006-11-11 05:44 am (UTC)There's a reason why one of my interests is 'sneakity sneak sneak'. I haven't played Sly Cooper, though. (Oh dear, now I'm worried I've over-hyped it. Try not to come after me with fire if it's not everything you hope for?)
It isn't all that spoilery...er...you might wanna skip the ones with Freya in them, is all. I don't reveal that SNAPE KILLS DUMBLEDORE or anything, but there are oblique spoilers if you squint. Caveat emptor?
no subject
Date: 2006-11-11 06:08 am (UTC)I love Sly Cooper. It's one of my top three video games I've played, which I guess doesn't say that much considering I haven't played that many, but still. I love making him jump onto everything, and he has a really hypnotic tail. And the voice acting is really good. (THERE WILL BE MUCH FIRE. AND FLAMES. AND HEAT. Anyway, there's no guarantee I'll actually manage to make it past the quantum training level, so I wouldn't worry about it if I were you.)
Did someone spoil you for Snape and Dumbledore? Because I am sensing waves of bitterness from my spot here across the ocean.
no subject
Date: 2006-11-11 06:21 am (UTC)The tutorial is really really easy, actually, that's why it sucks. It's horribly linear and the only mildly entertaining thing about it is the backstory. (I played some of Sly Cooper 3, once! It was fun! I'd love to buy it, but I'm a penniless er...graduate.)
Oh, I was lucky with the Half-Blood Prince - I snagged it and read it through the day it was released. I just find the meme it spawned hilarious. But people have spoiled me for things I really rather not have been spoiled for, like Serenity. That might be the bitterness.
no subject
Date: 2006-11-11 09:02 pm (UTC)Oh! Yeah, it me forever to get through the training tutorial for MGS (the original) because I was pretty bored by it, although I can't remember if that was mandatory or not. And I kept going, "Okay, so will there actually be all these conveniently placed crevices in the wall? Bad guys get stupider with each passing year." (Another really cool thing with Sly Cooper is that the characters actually get some development throughout the series. The second game is my absolute favourite, though.
I think I might have missed out on the Half-Blood Prince meme. Or it might have just been that I avoided anything that looked like it was Harry Potter related until I read the book. Did it have to do with Snape being evil or still-redeemable? Because I found that whole discussion pretty hilarious.

13. Castlevania Symphony of the Night? Interview with the Vampire? (what is it about Brooding with Style = Vampire?)
Re: Hmm...
Date: 2006-11-10 11:53 pm (UTC)12. Correct! I was wondering when someone'd get that.
13. Nope. And I'll tell you right now, not a vampire. Well, usually not. It depends on who is doing the looking.
Re: Hmm...

Why, yes, I'm blinding guessing. >_>

13. Correct! Horray! That's probably one of my vaguest, actually.
