HEY GUYS
GOD I'M TIRED, and I'm back in my parents' home for a couple of days while we sort out a few things, but yeah, I attended my orientation at QANTM and while they put a slightly terrifying emphasis on how busy we're going to be (I'll have a forty hour study week oh god somebody hold me), they were lovely people.
How lovely?
I bought myself an awesome hat about a week ago (it's a trilby; any Yahtzee quotes are entirely appropriate) and decided to wear it today, mostly to keep the sun off. The man in charge of taking the Student ID photos said I didn't have to take it off for the picture, and then in the space for 'distinguishing features', wrote the phrase 'awesome hat'.
I think I'll keep wearing it now. It's quite an icebreaker. Plus, they might not recognize me without it.
Also the students and the staff played videogames in the breakroom, which was covered in posters for comic books and movies and comic book movies and games and tabletop RPGs, and there's a library, which aside from books, also contains animated movies and videogames.
I can't wait 'til we actually start learning things.

The guy sitting next to me said "My thoughts exactly."

Now I'm packing up my posters and books and things and it makes me so happy to know that I could bring them in and hang them up and everyone would know what they were from. And the instructor saying "If we ask you your favourite movie and you say 'The Incredibles,' we want you to be able to say why; not just 'It looks good,' or 'There's lots of colour.'" I of course immediately began to think of all the reasons I liked it and also felt faint at the concept of instructors using Brad Bird movies in examples. And later he said, "Animators and programmers will have to work together. We know it'll be hard, because one of you practices what we call The Black Art, and the other isn't art at all," and the programming teachers genially insulted him.
I am of course terrified that this will all go wrong somehow, but it's nice to know I'll probably enjoy it until it does.
I bought it at that second hand store I volunteered at! A lady came in with a tremendous pile of stuff, including three hats: the trilby, a soldiery helmet, and a Sherlock Holmes-esque deerstalker. I think...I think I made the right decision.

Date: 2008-02-12 10:33 pm (UTC)I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR MORE! Also, I would like to know if you still have a download limit, or a pretty stable address that could be used to send you things like books.
WHAT ARE YOU POSTERS OF? You should ask Baco to tell you her story about an MGS poster. ...unless she already has. And oh man, that instructor sounds excellent. And, and, and you are so right, oh man, it's like you're being asked to do fandom stuff for your homework. SO AWESOME FDJKLADS
Tough call, but I think I would've made the same choice. I mean! Trilby! (Speaking of which, I have played approximately five minutes of Five Days a Stranger! It is quite fun, and I think I might be able to handle anything scary because the graphics are bad enough I don't think that death on the screen = death for realz. So in this case, bad graphics are a fantastic thing. I love his comments, too. "I'll let you know when I need to use it.")
