"You've got big ears."

I just bought a copy of Skulduggery Pleasant and read it all in one go.
It is not deep.
It is not groundbreaking.
It is, however, very smart, very witty, a masterpiece of lampshaded tropes and more fun than thirty barrels of monkeys, and that should be enough for anyone.
(It would make a brilliant animated movie. I want to make it.)

"That'll teach him to underestimate stupid people!"
Date: 2007-05-08 06:38 pm (UTC)Totally agreed on it making an awesome animated movie. I would love to see that. Though I'd be curious to see it done live-action, too, because making a photorealistic skeleton lovable would have to be all in the body language and in the voice-acting (and the clothes!), which... could be really cool.
"I was hoping for more. Something profound, perhaps. Maybe a poem."
Date: 2007-05-09 12:43 am (UTC)Quick! Who would you cast as his voice actor?
"We had a vote. I voted for me."
Date: 2007-05-09 01:53 am (UTC)Man, I dunno! It'd have to be someone with good range and, er, I think Irish? And I just don't know that many Irish actors, except Gabriel Byrne, and he's rather broody. Though I've never seen him try charming and upbeat, so, er, maybe? I dunno! How about you?
"I just made a whole speech about it. It was very good."
Date: 2007-05-09 01:09 pm (UTC)Artemis Fowl is actually pretty cool, though I suggest you stop at The Eternity Code unless you want to be severely annoyed. The first book is still my favourite because you can't actually tell who the bad guys are and you get exchanges like this:
'What's this?' [Root] enquired, none too pleasantly. 'A circus?'
Cudgeon's face was pale, but determined.
'No, Julius. It's the end of the circus.'
Root nodded. 'I see. And these are the clowns?'
Foaly's head poked through the doorway.
'Pardon me for interrupting your extended circus metaphor, but what the hell is that?'
Also the author is Irish! It has the same air of giving oldschool fantasy a swift kick in the behind. And awesome characters bantering wittily, and a kickass pikie chick.
Well the book describes him as 'smooth' and - FOR GOD'S SAKE BRAIN YOU CAN'T CAST STEPHEN RUSSELL IN EVERYTHING. Gah. Unfortunately I don't know any Irish actors except, er, Dylan Moran. I don't think he counts. What's Gabriel Byrne in?
"Think of it as an adventure. Because if you don't, you'll just become really, really depressed."
Date: 2007-05-09 11:20 pm (UTC)"I am known as... Merlin1987. You can call me Merl."
"Oh, wow, are you, like, a descendent of the original Merlin?"
"No, no, not really. Merlins 1 through 1986 were just taken, was all."
"Ah."
"So was 'MerlinTheGreat'."
"Yes, well."
"And 'MerlinTheImmortal'. And 'MerlinTheUndeniablyAwesome'."
I am going to start all my sentences with "Pardon me for interrupting your extended circus metaphor" now. Awesome! I will definitely check Artemis Fowl out, especially since I'm hankering for some good banter just now.
Well, there is Stephanie's comment about being able to listen to his voice forever... (It's oddly easy for me to picture Christopher Eccleston as Skulduggery's voice actor, but maybe that's just because there were bits that reminded me of Doctor Who.) Gabriel Byrne was Keaton in The Usual Suspects. I don't think his voice is especially smooth, though.
"Would you look at that? I'm such a genius."
Date: 2007-05-11 01:05 am (UTC)Bwah! Oh man. I can totally see that happening sometime in that world.
It is full of yay! The first is a siege story, the second is more like a full scale war, and the third is a heist. An awesome heist.
Gragh, I wish I knew more voice actors. Or, uh, actors full stop. Stephen Russell does have excellent range (I think he's a stage actor) but he's not even a little bit Irish. (Well Eccleston has got that whole "I am so much older and more intelligent and more powerful and more awesome than you can even comprehend" thing down. Although it'd probably be hard to convey his legendary intensity through a completely imobile expression.) I've never seen The Usual Suspects, so, er, I don't know who you're talking about. Though Skul can be rather broody when he puts his mind to it.
"Still a genius, Stephanie."

*ROFL* I hope in the next book we meet someone who has a name like that. I will totally heart them.
Oh man, I love heists. I'll have to check for the books today during my break.
Dude, you haven't seen The Usual Suspects? It is awesome, awesome, awesome, and one my favourite movies ever. I don't even know how to describe what it's about without getting into spoilers, but, uh, there's interrogation and a mystery and criminals being blackmailed by a much bigger, scarier criminal, and it's very cool.
(Agreed on Eccleston!) And yeah, I don't know many actors either!
