Thief of Memes
Mar. 11th, 2006 06:50 amI don't even like broccoli. But here I go again, stealing memes from people who don't even know me.
One half of a couple is standing in the fresh vegetable aisle of a large supermarket. The other half is on the other side of the shop. The two can see each other, but cannot communicate verbally. Can the other half convey to the one in the vegetable aisle that he wants broccoli?
Because I'm not a shipper in any way, I'm just going to do pairs that are important in my mind, that is Zim and Dib, Farah and the Prince, Simon and River. Proceed at your own risk.
If Farah was in a supermarket and spotted the Prince and the broccoli (what's they doing in a supermarket, them being royalty and all? ...Shut up) she would attempt to signal to him through a series of gestures that they worked out during their escape from the palace. Naturally she has to adjust them somewhat, because no matter how many ways you turn it, "Leap to that pole and throw that switch and then kill those monsters over there" does not mean "get the broccoli". The Prince, unfortunately, has no idea what these gestures mean, and has a vague worry in the back of his mind that she's somehow possessed by a demon. He walks up to her and a long, incredibly snarky argument ensues about why he should have understood her and how stupid he is, but underneath it all would be the sort of happy relief that comes from being completely comfortable in your relationship with someone.
With the Prince/Dark Prince spotting the broccoli, it would be a different matter. The Dark Prince of course wants tomatoes, and says so. He then decides to add something about what on earth is he doing in here anyway, shouldn't they be out destroying enemies and conquering stuff? The Prince decides he's not going to take this from one insistent little voice, and they both stand completely motionless in the supermarket for half an hour, arguing with each other in his head. By that time, Farah has moved on. They fail to get the broccoli. But they do eventually get the tomatoes.
If Zim saw the broccoli and Dib, he would not gesture - gesturing is for filthy human wormbabies. He would inform Dib of his "MIGHTY NEED" for the broccoli in tones that can be heard in the chips 'n' dips section on the other end of the supermarket.
If Dib saw the broccoli, then Zim, he would duck below the counter and sneak along to pop out at Zim and accuse him of being an alien, right before throwing the broccoli at him to prove it. Zim screams and ducks (it is Earth food, after all) and shrieks something that would prove beyond any doubt his extra-terrestial origins...if anyone one around them cared in the slightest. Which they don't.
River already knows Simon wants broccoli, so she picks it up and puts it in the basket. Wow, that was...dull. Psychics in memes are no fun.
If River wanted broccoli, however...she would be aware of Simon already, and perform a series of graceful, aesthetically pleasing gestures that convey she wants it with a minimum of fuss. Simon isn't looking yet, sadly enough. When he does look, he is terribly guilty about having ignored her and picks up the broccoli, and every other type of vegetable nearby. When they get back to the ship, she gives him one of those "Dude. Seriously. You're a moron, a dangerous moron," looks, but laughs anyway. The rest of the crew steal the vegetables and eat them, and Simon is left to eat the broccoli.
