Due to school and Centrelink and insane musicals and me being lazy, I have not posted in a while. It's weird, but I feel great - I've been tired or exhausted a lot, but I feel happier and more productive than I have in ages. I do my work and I clean my room and I wash my clothes and I feel good about it, and I've started reading my books again. I think they missed me. It's nice.

Anyway, I stole this meme from Squeem: comment, get given a letter, and post five or more songs starting with that letter. Squeem gave me W, so here we go! (Test mp3s only, delete in twenty-four hours, buy the albums if you like them. Y'all know the drill, I'm sure.)

Why So Serious? - Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard

Whatever you may think of The Dark Knight, this is one of the best character themes I've ever heard. It's long - nine minutes - but every second of it just screams madness. And sometimes, literally, just screams, especially the single sustained opening note, bent and twisted and pulsed but always recognizable, sending a chill down your spine whenever it's heard in the film. If you've ever wanted to hear string instruments tortured until they sound like something halfway between air raid sirens and the sound of tearing metal, here's the place. It makes me want to hide, but at the same time go out and blow something up and laugh.

Welcome Aboard the U.S.G. Ishimura - Jason Graves

Dead Space's soundtrack surprised me, actually - mostly because there was one. From the game, I thought there'd just be chords and loops, brief clips. But no, there is a soundtrack, and it's surprisingly good (and the titles are hilarious - there's one called Plasma Cutters Are Your Friend and another called Do Not Vomit, Do Not Shout). Anyway, if you saw me talking about Isaac and Nicole's theme, it's the very first thing you hear in this, and one of three times you hear it overall. I also like the swell that cues your first sight of the Ishimura - genuinely one of the few effective things in the game.

Wieldstrom Museum - Eric Brosius

Like all Thief music, this is very low-key and atmospheric rather than particularly melodic, but probably one of the more 'musical' themes in the games. I would describe it as...eerily opulent, I think, all creepy tinkling pianos and weird sustained notes, like the distorted sounds of a noble's garden party echoing after they're long gone.

What Else is There - Royksopp

More creepy! I don't know why I like so much creepy music starting with W. But this is creepy, and mournful, too, and kind of beautiful - though I'll be damned if I know what the lyrics are about. Definitely one of my favourite songs.

It's about you and the sun
A morning run
The story of my maker
What I have and what I ache for

Where is my Mind? - The Pixies

The credits music for Fight Club, and I can't think of any song more perfect - the lyrics are completely nonsensical but oddly applicable, the music is weirdly off-kilter, and it is, in general, the cherry on the total brain-fuck sundae that is that movie.

With your feet in the air and your head on the ground
Try this trick and spin it, yeah
Your head will collapse
But there's nothing in it
And you'll ask yourself

Where is my mind?

Welcome Home - Coheed and Cambria

Well my opinion of this song is 9 TRAILER 9 TRAILER 9 TRAILER 9 TRAILER

(Actually it's kind of awesome and epic and fabulous - though I really prefer the bits without lyrics, and going "Whoooa-ooooh-ooooh-ooooh." Mostly because the lyrics do not make sense.)

The stone for the curse you have blamed me
With love and devotion, I'll die as you sleep.

WALL-E - Thomas Newman

And rounding off the list with something adorable rather than creepy, Thomas Newman is made of more win than you. I love how it segues from silliness and funny sound effects to what sounds very much like wonder.
