So, after procrastinating for almost a year, I finally finished Half-Life 2. I have an excuse for the waiting around this time - somebody hacked our Steam account and Valve won't let us use it any more, and the hell we're buying a new copy for PC...! So we bought one for Xbox instead. Yes, yes, my soul actually went to Jhonen Vasquez a little while ago, fortunately, so I don't have to worry about that particular method of damnation.

Anyway, HOLY MONKEY GODZ it is such a beautiful game. I don't play FPS too often, so it comes as a shock to remember what it's like to walk out into an area and see it through your own eyes. Valve may be arses about their method of distribution, but shi-yite can they build a world. There's nothing quite like standing at the foot of the Combine Citadel and looking up...and up...and up...to see it disappear into the clouds. Pretty clouds. I love it when every shot of a game looks as though it could be one of those cg art pieces. The fact that it has the most awesomely awesome gameplay does help, though.

"Really? I don't know, I was more afraid of that damn wall than any of those little buzzing things - it was gargantuan and unstoppable, a symbol of the Co- ARGH FLAMING ZOMBIE."

Gotta love a game that makes you proclaim that at random intervals.

(DO NOT SEARCH FOR 'Gordon Freeman' AT DEVART. NOBODY REALLY DRAWS HIM. NOBODY. It's all just manipulating the promotional posters and sticking Evanescence lyrics on them. I am sad about that. However, I did discover that Hugh Laurie looks pretty convincing touched up into a HEV suit, and now I'm having very confused thoughts about a snarky Freeman running around with a crowbar cane.)

(PS: CREEPY G-MAN.)

(PPS: A lot of my town looks very City 17-y - it's got an orange-cream colour scheme, blowing papers, sparsely-leafed trees and the odd mix of old and new. It does not, however, have the gradual encroach of the hideously oppressive Combine technology. It's only a matter of time, though. Suppress your instincts. Obey. Obeeeeeey.)
