Nano-Moose's List of FanFiction That Doesn't Suck

Falling Feels Like Flying by Erin Flanagan: When Escher Griffin is taken hostage by a resurrected and desperate Doc Ock, she finds herself in the middle of a battle between the forces of good, evil, deadly assassins, and very spiffy science...

Oddly enough, despite the girl taken hostage being a direct self-insertion (even if she doesn't realise it), this fic is not a Mary-Sue fic. It's sweet, action-packed, hilarious and heart-rending. And incredibly well written. Give it a squizz.

Why me? A Love Story for Manic Depressives by Chris...eh...I don't know AKA Dust Traveller: Vincent wanted very little after Meteor, just to pass into quiet obscurity. Unfortunately fate seldom relinquishes its favorite chewtoy, and he will find himself embroiled in the affairs of a country on the brink of civil war. Ain't life grand?

Damn this man. He made me like Vincent. AND Yuffie...and I gather that this is nigh-on treason in the world of FFVII fandom. Hmmm. Anyway, it has a hefty dollop of angst, but eh, it's Vincent, what do you expect? Some extremely cool action, romance, and my favourite part in any story: a kick-ass I-am-badass-read-me-threaten scene. Plus an utterly terrifying flashback of Vincent as a Turk. What's not to like?

Going On by Dust Traveller: A question posed to you. Is it really hatred when it's all that keeps you alive? When you're all that's left of the human race, can you really be called human? When do the lines blur...? Dib, saviour of the human race, prodigy, outcast, is the very last human remaining after the Irkens finally arrive. Left on the planet Dirt, he scrapes a living...until something arrives that may change his fortunes, and his outlook, forever.

Mr. Traveller is very, very good at fanfiction. This fic, depressing, despair riddled, towards the end a little squishy, is probably one of the greatest Zim fics ever written, in spite of its limited setting. I love it so. What got me into his stuff in the first place.

Anything Written by Stefan Gagne

The guy just writes Slayers fanfiction better than anyone else I've ever seen. Both Demiurge and the Trilogy have their own highlights, one of them in particular his fantastic characterisation. Snide references to everything from Monkey Island to Terry Pratchett, drugs, theme parks, angst, religion, goofiness, the Apocolypse, Pendix the Librarian...and his Xellos is the greatest thing ever. Read. In the name of the Golden Lord, read and weep to be so far beneath him.

The Shoebox Project by LadyJaida and Dorkoriffic: The shoebox is somewhat metaphorical. It has bits and bats here and there, but the rest is memory.

Normally, I despise Harry Potter fanfiction with a passion matched only by the Orcs' hatred for everything in general. I like this. It's a multi-media livejournal thingy including notes, photos, drawings, and your plain vanilla fanficy entries written in third person present tense. What I love about it is they way it characterizes each of the Marauders (if you don't know who they are, read PoA and pay attention this time) so perfectly you almost feel Sirius smirking at you, or Remus' long-suffering sigh, or James' grin or Peter's worried blinking. It's a bit slashy (unfortunately), but so very wonderful I'm ignoring it. You KNOW it has to be good if that's the case.

MirrorFeather by seventhe: When is a sorceress not a sorceress? Three movements: one for each face in the mirror.

This fiction is about being crazy, about screwing with time and destiny, about power and grief and death. It might make you cry with sheer weirdness, but it is also full of spectacular imagery. I particularly love Ultimecia's perspective. Something about this story makes me want to draw, and it has a nice crazy-logic-equation near the end. Oh, I'm not doing it justice - just read it. I can't understand why it's not more popular.

Danny's Inferno by Legend Maker: A Teen Titans and Danny Phantom crossover. Amity Park is under seige, attacked by a terrible evil that another group of teen superheroes know all too well. And Danny, even with their aid, will learn that evil never dies, and it needs...to burn...

I can't believe I even started reading this in the first place - I've seen one episode of Danny Phantom and nothing at all from Teen Titans. On top of that, this author has a metric assload of backstory, dealing with her villain and her OC. The thing reads like a hugely long, crazy action scene with a few small links about ideals and belief. I still love it. Danny is just a nice change after so many anti-heroes and bitter, cynical assholes. Sizzle, as a villain, is TERRIFYING and near-invincible. Saviour, the OC, has a few Gary-Stu qualities, but makes up for it by looking like an arse quite a lot. Fortunately almost everything is explained, and it's quite funny at times. There is also some bang-on characterization.
