Re: The Dark Knight.
Holy fucking shit.
I - can't even - !
(Okay, look: don't go to see this movie drunk or in anyway less than your mental best, or you will get lost, and while there is a lot of shiny it will not sustain you through the running time. The film deserves better than that.
Also, um? Best entrance for a character since Jack fucking Sparrow, it turns out. Ledger couldn't have had a better last role if he'd consciously chosen it, and he knocked it into the stratosphere. Wherever you are, man, I offer my congratulations.)
EDIT: And once you come home all depressed from watching it, I recommend you see Dr. Horrible at his Sing Along Blog. Even if he isn't actually a physician, except in the general societal sense kinda.
HECK WITH THAT, JUST GO WATCH THE AVATAR FINALE INSTEAD. I THINK MY HEART MAY EXPLODE WITH JOY

Date: 2008-07-18 11:13 am (UTC)On the one hand, Batman Begins is a really good movie, in spite of - strangely enough - the epically botched fight scenes.
On the other...okay. Here's what's good to know:
The Scarecrow, Doctor Crane, was a psychiatrist who gassed his patients with a fear-inducing hallucinogen. Batman turned it back on him and drove him insane, but he wasn't captured. He tends to wear a burlap mask.
Bruce Wayne loves Rachel Dawes and revealed his secret to her, but said they couldn't be together while he was Batman - with the caveat that at some point he might no longer be Batman.
Wayne Manor got exploded at the end of the last movie, but they're rebuilding it.
Falconi, before becoming one of Doctor Crane's 'patients', was basically the king of Gotham's underworld, its most powerful mob boss. Obviously he is neither any longer, with all the problems that brings.
Commissioner Gordon used to be the only completely uncorrupted cop in the whole of Gotham's police force, and he's now kind of Batman's liaison. He warned Bruce that the whole 'dressing up as a bat' thing might induce people to try and upstage him.
I do recommend you see it, but be warned that it is dark. Awesome, but...argh. The Joke is just pure horrifying - a 'magic trick' with a pencil that made me gasp comes to mind. Hence the Dr. Horrible, which is like an injection of pure glee.

Date: 2008-07-19 07:08 am (UTC)YES YES YES and QUADRUPLE YES and I have seen the trailer and...well, I'm still sceptical of the film because I didn't actually like 300 and so much of Watchmen's greatness is bound up in its medium, but at least I know it'll be pretty. The glass clock/ship on Mars had my gear kink in overdrive, for one thing.

Date: 2008-07-20 02:51 am (UTC)I'm just skeptical because that didn't just use the medium, it became it. The layout of speech bubbles in the panels, especially in the scenes at the news stand, are important. A lot of stuff in the comic, I don't know how it's even possible to transfer that to film.
